Claude AI for small business: what it does, what it costs and when it falls short

What Claude by Anthropic can do for a small business, what the free plan covers, when Pro or Team pays off and how to protect your data.

Claude is an AI assistant made by the American company Anthropic. The free plan is enough to try it out. If you use it every day, Pro costs $20 (€17.70) a month before tax. A business with two or more people should look at the Team plan, which doesn't train on company data by default.

All numbers in this article were checked on October 1, 2026. Sources are listed at the end.

What Claude AI is

Claude is a family of language models and also the app where you talk to them. Anthropic first released Claude publicly in March 2023, and it has been available across Europe since May 14, 2024.

You can use it at claude.ai, in the desktop app for Windows and Mac, on your phone and as an add-in for Excel, Word and the Chrome browser. In the app you pick a model. These three are the ones you'll see most.

  • Opus 5.5 is built for long, demanding work. Anthropic recommends it as the first choice, but it's not included in the free plan.
  • Sonnet 5.5 is faster and cheaper. It handles most everyday tasks.
  • Haiku 4.5 is the fastest and cheapest, and fits automations through the API better than chat.

Models change often. A model name from an older tutorial may no longer apply.

Claude in smaller languages

Claude reads and writes most European languages, and the interface is available in ten of them. I work with Claude in Slovak every day and it writes Slovak well. There is no public benchmark to back that up, though. Anthropic publishes Global MMLU results for 42 languages, and Czech is on the list while Slovak isn't.

Whatever the language, read what Claude writes before you send it, the way you would with anyone else's text. It helps to write your rules into a project once (more on projects below). For example, whether you address customers formally, which quotation marks you use and which words your company avoids.

What a small business can do with Claude

It saves the most time on writing and on working with documents. These are the features worth knowing.

Feature What it's for Plan
Projects a folder of instructions and files Claude uses in every chat in that project Free up to five, Pro and up unlimited
Files and PDFs reads a contract, a quote or a spreadsheet. PDFs up to 100 pages with charts, up to 1,000 pages as text only all
File creation returns a finished Excel file with formulas, a Word document, a PowerPoint deck or a PDF all
Web search finds current information and cites sources all
Gmail, Calendar, Drive searches your email and documents. It drafts an email, you send it yourself all
Research longer research across many sources Pro and up
Claude Code works on its own with files and code on your computer Pro and up
Excel, Word, PowerPoint Claude inside Office, keeps formulas in Excel paid plans

Claude doesn't create photos or illustrations. It can draw a chart, a diagram or a simple web page, and it can read images. For photos you need another tool.

How much Claude AI costs

Anthropic lists prices in US dollars, before tax. Euro amounts in parentheses use the European Central Bank reference rate for October 1, 2026 (€1 = $1.1298). You'll see the exact price for your account at claude.ai/upgrade.

Plan Monthly Billed yearly Who it's for
Free $0 $0 trying it out
Pro $20 (€17.70) $17 (€15.05) one person, daily work
Max 5x $100 (€88.51) monthly only all-day work with long documents
Max 20x $200 (€177.02) monthly only all-day work, programming
Team $25 (€22.13) per person $20 (€17.70) companies with 2 to 150 people
Team, premium seat $125 (€110.64) per person $100 (€88.51) people in a company who keep hitting limits

Competitors price their plans almost the same. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 (€17.70), Google AI Pro costs €21.99 a month in Slovakia. The difference is what you get. Google adds 5 TB of storage and image and video generation, and ChatGPT draws images too. Claude doesn't make images. In GDPval, a test of real office work published by Anthropic, Opus 5.5 scored above OpenAI's models. Take a vendor's own results with a grain of salt. Anthropic itself says benchmark gaps no longer tell you much about real work.

How usage limits work

Even paid plans don't offer unlimited use. Usage is counted in five-hour windows, and paid plans also have a weekly limit. Anthropic doesn't publish a fixed number of messages. It depends on the length of the chat, the size of your files and the model you choose. One long chat with an uploaded contract uses more than ten short questions.

Chat on the web, on your phone and in Claude Code all draw from the same allowance. Once you hit the limit on a paid plan, you can buy extra usage at API prices, with a cap you set yourself.

What Claude does with your data

On the Free, Pro and Max plans, you decide whether Anthropic may use your chats to train its models. The difference is big. If you allow training, chats can be kept for up to five years. If you don't, for 30 days.

Three settings I recommend checking right away:

  1. Training. In Settings, under Privacy, turn off the switch that lets Anthropic use your chats to improve its models, if you put company information into Claude.
  2. Thumbs up and down. When you rate a reply, Anthropic stores the whole chat for up to five years and may use it for training. Don't rate sensitive chats.
  3. Incognito. An incognito chat isn't saved to memory and isn't used for training.

Team and Enterprise plans don't train on your data by default. For people in Europe the provider is Anthropic Ireland, but data is stored in the US. If you need your data to stay in the EU, you have to go through Amazon, Google or Microsoft cloud, not the regular app.

When Claude falls short

  • For photos and illustrations. It doesn't make them.
  • When you need to know it will be up. In September 2026 Claude had seven major outages according to monitoring services. On September 29, for example, claude.ai, Claude Code and the API were down for two hours. In April, Anthropic itself admitted that fast growth had hurt reliability across all plans, especially at peak times.
  • When you'd depend on a single model. In June 2026 Anthropic had to switch off two of its models for all customers on the order of the US government. Access came back after three weeks.
  • As your only source of truth. Anthropic itself says Claude sometimes answers incorrectly and can make up a quote that looks credible. Check numbers and legal references.
  • For very recent events. Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 reliably know things up to June 2026. Anything newer they find only through web search.

Getting started in fifteen minutes

Most people open the chat, ask one question and stop at an average answer. It works better when you first give Claude the context of your business, so it doesn't have to guess.

  1. Create an account at claude.ai and turn off training right away (see above).
  2. Create a project named after your business. In its instructions, write once and for good what you do, whether you address customers formally or not, which words you avoid and that Claude should ask rather than assume.
  3. Upload your material to the project. Your price list, a sample quote, your terms and conditions, a few emails that went well.
  4. Try your first tasks. These three work in almost any business.
  • "Write a quote for this client from my meeting notes. Use our price list from the project. At the end, list what was missing from the notes."
  • "A customer sent this complaint. Suggest a reply that's factual and friendly. Don't promise anything until I approve it."
  • "Read this contract and list our obligations, deadlines and penalties. Cite the clause for each one so I can check it."

The last sentence in each task matters. It makes Claude point out its own gaps, and you know what to check.

How I use Claude

I use Claude every day for everything I do for clients. I build websites and apps in Claude Code, which works directly with files on my computer. That's how this website was built, and a CRM for ESG KLUB. I write blogs and LinkedIn posts for clients with it, do SEO and prepare AI training for companies. The Instagram posts on this site show up on their own, because a script Claude wrote downloads them every morning. This article and its charts were made with Claude as well, and I checked the numbers at the source.

That's why I keep repeating one thing in company training. Chat is the entry point. The real value comes when you move further, from single questions to projects with fixed rules, then to connecting your email and documents, and finally to automations that run on their own.

Free, Pro or Team

  • You're just trying it. Free. Opus isn't included and limits are low, but it's enough for a first impression.
  • You use it alone every day. Pro. Billed yearly, it comes to $17 (€15.05) a month before tax.
  • There are at least two of you and you handle company data. Team. It doesn't train on your data and adds shared projects and access management. If you work alone, Team isn't an option, so turn training off in your personal account.
  • All day with long documents or code. Max, starting with the $100 (€88.51) plan.

Before you pay, check the price in euros in your account. In the EU you have 14 days to withdraw from a subscription bought on the web and get your money back.
